We’re thrilled to share that Green Valley is participating in The Great S.A. Reading Challenge, a city-wide initiative designed to spark a lifelong love of reading in San Antonio’s 3rd graders! This challenge brings together schools, families, and the entire community to encourage daily, independent reading outside of school hours.
📚 What is it? The Great S.A. Reading Challenge runs from October through April and encourages every 3rd-grade student to read at least 25 minutes a day outside of school. All types of reading count - books, magazines, digital texts, and more! Students track their reading minutes, and schools will compete in a fun, friendly bracket-style competition.
🏆 What’s in it for your child? Throughout the challenge, top readers and classrooms will be celebrated with shoutouts, prizes, and fun virtual spotlight moments. The competition culminates in an exciting citywide Championship Celebration in April for the top Final 4 schools!
🗓️ Key Dates:
● Oct 20, 2025: Official Kickoff
● Oct 27 – Nov 10: Pre-Season Reading
● Nov 10 – Jan 5: Regular Reading Season
● Jan 19 – Apr 7: Bracket Challenge (Finals Competition)
● Apr 10: Championship Celebration
🌟 How You Can Help: Encourage your child to read daily and help them track their reading minutes on their reading log. Remind them to turn in their reading log every Monday. Together, let’s inspire a city of readers, one third-grader at a time! If you have any questions, reach out to the campus coordinator, Kimberly McDaniel.
