Schertz, TX - November 5, 2025 - Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (SCUC ISD) extends its appreciation to all who participated in the November election. Preliminary results indicate that Proposition A was defeated. We will continue to monitor mail and provisional ballots as the election margins are very close.
If these results are confirmed, the district now faces significant financial challenges as it begins preparing for the 2026–2027 budget cycle. Rising costs, unfunded legislative mandates, and limited state funding continue to strain the district’s ability to sustain programs and operations at current levels.
“While the outcome of the election was not what we had hoped for, our focus remains on serving students and their families, and supporting staff to the greatest extent possible,” said Superintendent Paige Meloni. “At the same time, the challenges before us are real. We cannot continue to operate with a deficit budget, and that means every decision ahead will continue to require our thoughtful planning, collaboration and transparency as we navigate the financial realities ahead.”
In recent years, SCUC ISD has absorbed rising costs in staffing, transportation, utilities and instructional materials while maintaining programs and services that directly benefit students. Without the additional revenue Proposition A would have provided, the district will now begin a comprehensive review of expenditures to align future budgets with existing funding levels.
To support this process, the district will establish a Cost Drivers Committee to examine major areas of spending and identify potential reductions. The committee’s recommendations will help guide district leadership in prioritizing essential services and programs that most directly impact classrooms and student learning. Membership will include district and campus staff, parents, and community stakeholders.
“The Board of Trustees and administration are committed to approaching this process with care and transparency,” said Board President Ed Finley. “These next steps will be difficult, but necessary. We will continue to engage our community in open dialogue and make decisions guided by our purpose–our students–supported by our people and strengthened by our partnerships.”
The district will provide updates in the coming months as the financial planning process moves forward.
