Stephanie Bryan, Band Director at Schlather Intermediate School, is in the running for America’s Favorite Teacher, sponsored by Reader’s Digest. Ms. Bryan, who is currently fourth in the voting during the Group Phase, could win a $25,000 prize, a Hawaiian getaway, an appearance in Reader’s Digest, and visit to her campus from Bill Nye, noted American science television personality.
“I sent in an application and got selected,” Bryan said. “My colleagues (at Schlather) were telling me how they voted and how excited they were.” Bryan has taught for 14 years, the last eleven at SCUC. In her contest profile, she lists one of her more memorable moments.
“Several years ago, I had a student who could not get a buzz or a sound with his trombone,” Bryan recounted. “We tried every single day working with him to get him to buzz his lips rather than hum.” Her patience came to fruition two months later.
“I had him play. He finally got the buzz! But the most amazing part about it was when the entire class stood up to cheer for him. That was a smile I will never forget!”
Voting for America’s Favorite Teacher ends in a few weeks. She needs to stay in the Top 10 by March 20, 2025. The following week, she will need to stay in the Top 5. Supporters can get one free vote per day. Additional votes can be purchased at $1 per vote, with proceeds going to the Planetary Society.
